The Apalachicola Community Easter Egg Hunt Returns!

April 7, 2022 by Augusta West

For the first time since the pandemic began, the Apalachicola Community Easter Egg Hunt will be back in its traditional format at the Chapman Botanical Gardens, with a special appearance by the Easter Bunny. Children between the ages of two and twelve are invited to hunt for more than 2,000 candy-stuffed eggs during the hunt on Saturday, April 16.

Apalachicola Main Street and Bring Me a Book Franklin are co-hosts of the event. “We’re pleased to bring back this cherished annual tradition for local families,” said Main Street’s Executive Director, Augusta West. “Last year the event was adapted to the more socially distanced Bunny Hop Bingo due to the pandemic. The children loved it, but we’re excited to be able to hold the traditional gathering this year.”

The event will be held on the grounds of the Chapman Botanical Gardens on Market Street in Apalachicola. The excitement will get underway promptly at 9:30 a.m. Children will be divided into age groups, with each group assigned their own hunt area. Within each hunt area there will be hundreds of hidden eggs filled with candy and one special golden egg that can be turned in for a gift basket.

Each child will also receive a raffle ticket for prize drawings after the hunt. Being given away are scooters, toys, and other gifts. In addition, Bring Me a Book Franklin volunteers will give each child a free age-appropriate book to take home!

Children should bring their own baskets, buckets, or bags for the eggs they find.  There will be bags available to anyone who forgets.

The egg hunt is supported with sponsorships, monetary donations, and prize donations each year from Duke Energy, Tabernacle of Faith, Dollar General, Apalachicola Main Street, and individual donors. To donate, please click here.

Volunteers are needed to set up, hide eggs, and serve as Bunny Leaders for each age group. If you would like to volunteer, please contact Apalachicola Main Street at 844-272-2523 or [email protected].

Exhibit Opening Reception

September 28, 2021 by Augusta West

The Apalachicola Center for History, Culture and Art’s newest exhibit is entitled Journey to Freedom: The Odyssey of Abolitionist Moses Roper. An outdoor/indoor opening reception will be held on Thursday, September 30th, and the public is invited to see the exhibition, enjoy some food, and have a conversation!

Discover the amazing story of Moses Roper, who was once enslaved on an Apalachicola steamboat, but later escaped slavery in a harrowing 500-mile journey of survival across north Florida and south Georgia in 1834! After arriving in Savannah, Georgia, Roper sailed to New York and later to England. He authored one of the first autobiographical accounts ever published by a survivor of slavery in the American South and became a tireless advocate in the transatlantic abolitionist movement. The exhibit features interpretive panels, digital interactive maps, and an 1840 edition of Roper’s fugitive slave narrative.
